Why I Write Reviews
I write about language learning technology because choosing the wrong tool costs people time and money they didn’t need to spend. Between AI conversation apps, tutoring platforms, spaced repetition software, and immersion tools, the market is crowded with options that all claim to work. My job is to tell you, specifically, which ones actually do, for which kind of learner, and why.
When I review a tool, I look at what it’s actually good at, where it falls short, and who it fits. I’m not interested in crowning a single “best” app for everyone. A tool that’s ideal for a total beginner might be the wrong fit for someone stuck at an intermediate plateau, and I’d rather tell you that directly than pretend one product solves every problem.
How I Research My Articles
Every claim on this site is grounded in either a named, cited source or something I’ve personally tested. When I cite research, I link to the original study or dataset, not a secondhand summary, and I write the finding in my own words rather than copying language from the source.
Where possible, I test the products I write about myself. I’ve sat in six live Lingoda group classes to write that review, run comparisons using real placement tests and pricing pages, and I speak three languages fluently, with a fourth (Italian) as an ongoing, non-fluent project I draw on directly when writing about the learner experience of not being fluent yet. When I haven’t personally used a tool, I say so, and I rely on the vendor’s own documentation, independent research, and verified user feedback instead of guessing.
How Affiliate Links Keep This Site Free
Heklin is free to read because some of the links on this site are affiliate links. If you sign up for a tool through one of them, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
Affiliate status never decides which tools I recommend or how I rank them. A tool has to meet real editorial criteria (proven learning value, active maintenance, honest positioning) before it earns a place on this site, and that bar doesn’t change based on whether there’s a commission attached. Some tools I recommend have no affiliate relationship with Heklin at all. When a vendor has provided free or extended access so I can test a product firsthand, I disclose that specifically in the post, separately from the standard affiliate note.
How I Use AI in My Content Process
I use AI tools to help with research, drafting, and editing, so I can publish more consistently without cutting corners on accuracy. AI helps me pull together research, structure a first draft, and check that a post follows the site’s editorial and formatting standards.
AI does not replace my own judgment or firsthand testing. I review every draft, fact-check every claim and source, and rewrite anything that doesn’t reflect what I actually know or believe about a tool. If I haven’t tested something myself, no amount of AI assistance will make a post claim that I have. The opinions, the verdicts, and the responsibility for what’s published here are mine.
